Some common problems in sport podiatry;
- A Morton’s neuroma is typically described as a compression of the nerve that runs in between the 3rd and 4th metatarsals. Due to the compression this can cause scar tissue to form and enlargement of the intermetatarsal nerve.
- Patella-femoral pain syndrome refers to the pain arising from the joint where the kneecap connects to the thigh bone.
- Plantar fasciitis is where the plantar fascia becomes damaged, inflamed and painful. The most common site of pain is the posterior portion of the fascia located at the plantar heel. What are heel spurs? Heel spurs are bony growths as a result of tight plantar fascia attaching to the plantar heel. Although they look painful there is no direct relationship to heel pain. Most commonly it is plantar fasciitis which is the cause of the pain.
- Posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (PTTD) is an inflammation and/or overstretching of the posterior tibial tendon in the foot. An important function of the posterior tibial tendon is to support the arch in the foot. In PTTD the tendons ability to perform this function is impaired and this can often result in flattening of the foot.
- Sever’s disease is an acute injury to the growth plate at the back of the heel common in young athletes. It is most common between the ages of 10-12.
- Shin splints is often used to describe generalized pain during or after activity in the lower leg region.
